Dípticos Nazaríes, 2021

Art FAD Awards 2021 nominee.

Exhibition at Museu del Disseny (Design Hub Barcelona) June 2 – August 29, 2021

Dípticos Nazaríes (Nasrid Diptychs) places ornament at the center of identity discourse, challenging Eurocentric visions that consider non-western ornamental art as a minor art form. The work re-builds the so called seven polygons of the Nasrid Dynasty of the Alhambra Palace in Granada: origami bird, airplain, leaf, bone, flower, flying fish and petal. These figures, aimed to enhance the political power of the Sultan, are interpreted in Dípticos Nazaríes by representing their inner pure forms (circles, squares, triangles, rhombus) in movement  (rotation, translation and symmetry) through a dual expressive palette of figure-ground, mass and void, light and shadow and black and white.

Cut-out geometric drawing and collage on acid free 400 g/m2, 100% cotton Cartiera Magnani paper, museum board and Ph free glue. Size: 48,6 x 28,6 cm. Seven diptychs
